Driving Instructor Training
Become a Driving Instructor
Driving instructor training with The Bright Red L
gives you a route into a new career in driver training. It is a great business
opportunity where you will be your own boss because most driving instructors are
self employed either as franchisees to a driving school or working completely
independently. When you train to become a driving instructor with The Bright Red L
you are under no obligation to become one of our franchisees, however with one of
the
best value franchises available we are sure you will want to consider it.
To qualify as a Driving Instructor, commonly referred to as an Approved Driving Instructor or ADI, you will have to pass 3 tests set by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) as follows:
- Driving Instructor Part 1 Test - A theory test which is similar to the one learner drivers take upgraded to a standard expected of an advanced driver.
- Driving Instructor Part 2 Test - A test of your practical driving ability to a standard expected of an advanced driver.
- Driving Instructor Part 3 Test - A test of your driving instructor teaching ability.
So what does driving instructor training involve?
The Part 1 ADI test - is a theory test taken at the same test centre as learners take their test. It is all computer based. The best way to study for this is by home study. We provide self study materials and mentoring to help you through the test.
The Part 2 ADI test - As an experienced driver you will need to reach the standard of an advanced driver to pass this test. Most drivers need about 10 to 20 hours tuition to reach the standard required and we use either in house or the very best independent trainers for your ADI training.
Once you pass the part 2 test you can apply for a 6 month PDI licence from the DSA to start teaching. A prerequisite for the PDI licence is a further 40 hours training after passing your part 2 ADI test. You have to be associated with a driving school at this point as PDI instructors are not permitted to work independently. Our franchise is for both PDI and ADI instructors.
The Part 3 ADI Test - This is a test of your instructional ability. By working as a PDI you will gain valuable experience and would have taken your 40 hours training to obtain your PDI licence. Your training and teaching experience gained as a PDI prepares you for the Part 3 ADI test. You can train for the part 3 test without being a PDI instructor, you will need further training to pass the test, expect this to be 40 to 60 hours.
What does it cost?
- Part 1 ADI test study pack and mentoring £249.00.
- Part 2 ADI test training is £40 per hour on a pay as you learn basis.
- Part 3 ADI test training is also £40 per hour on a pay as you learn basis.
There are fees for the DSA tests, their website details the current charges. You should normally expect to take anything from 30 to 60 hours driving instructor training to pass the tests depending on how well you learn and whether you take a PDI licence.
What are the potential earnings?
As an example our Portsmouth Driving Instructors are earning £99 for their first 6 hours of training with a pupil and £20 per hour after that. If you multiply the hourly rate by how many hours you would want to work and subtract the costs of a franchise this gives an estimate of potential earnings.
